Indirect Care — Scored on Every Skill · Cuidado indirecto — evaluado en cada destreza

Indirect Care & Compassion

Cuidado indirecto y compasión

Indirect care is everything you do around the skill: how you greet, protect, explain, listen and reassure. Evaluators score it on every single skill — and your residents feel it long after you leave the room. Many of the people you care for live with loneliness, depression, anxiety, dementia or chronic illness. Your kindness is part of their treatment.

Behind every skill is a human being who may not have had a visitor in weeks. Slow down. Say their name. Ask about their day. Notice their mood. A CNA who is kind, patient and attentive is the CNA a family trusts — and the CNA an evaluator passes.

Vaya despacio. Diga su nombre. Pregúntele cómo estuvo su día. Note su estado de ánimo.

Indirect care steps — before, during and after every skill

  1. 1

Knock, wait for permission, and greet the resident by their preferred name.

  2. 2

Introduce yourself and say what you are going to do, in simple words, before you start.

  3. 3

Ask permission and offer choices — clothing, water temperature, when to start.

  4. 4

Protect privacy: close the door, pull the curtain, keep the body covered.

  5. 5

Make eye contact, sit or bend to their level, and speak calmly — never over their head to someone else.

  6. 6

Ask about their day, their family, their favorite music — and truly listen to the answer.

  7. 7

Encourage independence: let them do everything they are able to do themselves.

  8. 8

Watch for pain, sadness, withdrawal or confusion, and report changes to the nurse.

  9. 9

Thank them, ask if they need anything else, leave the call light in reach, and say goodbye warmly.
